De Basisschool: Dagboek van het Afscheid
Children in The Netherlands spend a lot of time from their fourth until their twelfth year in primary school. It is an important and decisive phase in the process of growing up. They learn to read and write as well as other basic skills that are meaningful on the path to adulthood. The Amsterdam primary school the Oostelijke Eilanden (Eastern Islands) gives its’ own special meaning to this process. A lot of emphasis is put on the individuality of the children. Every child is different and asks for a special approach. They are also challenged to work independently. In ‘Farewell Primary School’ we follow the making of the farewell musical, the final assignment that the teachers give the children before they wander out in the world. We see the challenges that this process brings to the teachers as well as the students.
