Indonesische portretten I: Yogyakarta 2006
‘Indonesian Portraits’ is an ongoing project by Martin van den Oever, Petra Timmer and Jos Janssen. Two parts have been finished up till now. Part 1 contains six portraits of Dutch speaking Indonesians from Yogyakarta, the heart of Java. They have learned Dutch in the colonial period and reflect on the bond they have with this language and on their youth, the time of the struggle for independence and the separation from The Netherlands. It came about as an art project as part of the research program ‘From the Dutch East-Indies to Indonesia’ by the Dutch Institute for War Documentation (NIOD).

Martin van den Oever (1959) is a filmmaker and a photographer. He has produced several documentary projects and cultural-educational programs. Martin works at the crossroads between the visual arts and social and historical sciences. The main focus in his work is personal transmission.
Petra Timmer (1958) studied Art History and received her Phd. degree in 2000 at the Free University of Amsterdam. She works as an independant researcher, editor and is responsible for the creation of exhibitions for Dutch and foreign museums and cultural institutions.
Jos Janssen (1953) works in the field of sonology and gamelan music. He is a part-time media technician for the VA-AVMI (Verbal Art in the Audiovisual Media of Indonesia) and Indonesian Mediations Project van de University of Leiden.
